Just like any part of the human body, it is important that you take care of your brain in order for it to stay healthy and function as well as possible. When needing extra focus and energy, if you find yourself often turning to caffeine then you may want to consider adding a supplement to your diet.

Instead of consuming caffeine which may give you some initial energy but will inevitably give you a “crash”, you can take nootropic supplements which will give you the focus and energy that you need. In addition, nootropics provide you with lots of other health benefits that you simply won’t get from caffeine.

Explanation of what a Nootropic is

Most nootropics are designed to help you get in to a flow state. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, it means the optimal level of consciousness where your brain is performing at its peak. For example, have you ever felt like you were “in the zone” and flew through your work? If so, that is what it means to be in a flow state.

Unfortunately not all nootropic supplement are created equal and with so many options on the market, it can be very confusing and overwhelming trying to find the nootropic that you need to achieve peak mental performance. Among one of the oldest and most popular nootropic supplements is Alpha Brain.

Over the years Alpha Brain has grown in popularity due to celebrity endorsements from people such as Joe Rogan, who swear by its effectiveness to improve cognitive performance. But instead of taking a celebrity’s word for it, its important to do your own research.

So how well does Alpha Brain actually work and is it as effective as other available nootropics? In this review, we will tell you how this nootropic stands against its competitors and whether or not we recommend taking this product.

Alpha Brain Ingredients

Vitamin B6 (10mg) – This is a water-soluble vitamin that the human body doesn’t produce and must be obtained through your diet (1). Studies have shown that B6 can improve brain function. However, most people do not have Vitamin B6 deficiencies so this may not be a necessary ingredient.
L-Tyrosine (Unkown Dose) – An amino acid that is naturally produced in the body from a different amino acid called phenylalanine. L-Tyrosine is important in producing chemicals in the brain that aid nerve cells with communication. This ingredient is used to improve focus, attention, and alertness.
L-Theanine (Unknown Dose) – An amino acid that is not naturally produced in the body but can be found in certain types of mushrooms, green tea, and black tea. This amino acid helps to improve mental focus and cognitive performance while in stressful situations when paired with caffeine.
Oat Straw Extract (Unknown Dose) – This substance is derived from Oat Straw, a green oat grass. Unfortunately it hasn’t been widely tested to confirm its cognitive effects. While one studied showed that it improved memory, attention, and concentration another study did not show any cognitive benefits at all. It is important to note that the first study was funded by the company that created Oat Straw Extract so the research may have been biased. For now it is unclear what this ingredient is doing.
Phosphatidylserine (Unknown Dose) – A fat molecule that is a major component of all cell membranes. Phosphatidylserine is naturally found in certain foods and helps protect cells in the body. It is essential for nerve cells within the brain to function properly by helping transmit messages between each other. Studies show that it helps prevent memory loss and increase cognitive speed.
Cat’s Claw Extract (350 mg) – A substance derived from a tropical vine native to Central and South America (2). While it does have certain health benefits, none of those health benefits have been associated with the brain. This ingredient has no business being in a nootropic supplement.
Alpha GPC (Unknown Dose) – A natural fatty acid. This compound is found in a variety of different foods, particularly ones that are soy based. Alpha GPC increases the release of Acetylcholine neurotransmitters that boost both learning and memory.
Bacopa Monnieri Extract (100 mg) – Derived from a tropical plant, research has found this to be effective in boosting brain function by improving memory, increasing processing speed of visual information, and speeding up learning rate. (3) It achieves these cognitive benefits by increasing the growth of nerve endings, known as dendrites.
Huperzine A (400 mcg) – Also known as Huperzia serrata, is a substances derived from a herb called Chinese Club Moss. Huperzine A acts as a Cholinesterase inhibitor which prevents Acetycholine from breaking down. As a result, this substance is great at reducing the effects of age-related cognitive decline. Huperzia serrata is also great for increasing your energy and improving alertness.
L-Leucine (Unknown Dose) – An essential amino acid known to help build muscle. However, there are no cognitive benefits to using L-Leucine. This has no business being in a nootropic supplement.
Pterostilbene (Unknown Dose) – A natural compound found is certain foods, this substance is typically used to reduce inflammation or act as an anti-oxidant. Pterostilbene does help to preserve loss of memory due to aging. However, if you are still young this many not be much of a benefit to you.

What we Think of the Onnit Alpha Brain Formula

A man in black shirt talking in to a microphoneOur overall feelings on Alpha Mind’s formulation are good. The formula does have a some great ingredients that will definitely help improve your mental performance such as: L-Tyrosine, Phosphatidylserine, Alpha GPC, and Bacopa Monnieri Extract.

However, there are a few ingredients in this formulation that seems unnecessary to a nootropic supplement and offer no cognitive benefit such as: Oat Straw Extract, Cat’s Claw Extract, and L-Leucine. Furthermore, many of the ingredients (such as Alpha GPC) are part of a “proprietary blend” which doesn’t provide you a definite dosage amount, making it impossible to determine if you are getting the right quantities of ingredients.

With a proprietary blend the concern is always that the manufacturer is hiding behind a poor quality formulation. I don’t think this is the case with Alpha Brain but the fact that they give exact dosage for Bacopa but not Alpha GPC (among others) does give us pause.

Overall we think there are enough effective ingredients in this supplement that it works pretty well.

Onnit Alpha Brain FAQs

Does Alpha Brain Work?

Yes, Alpha Brain works and will improve your cognitive performance, primarily affecting your memory, focus, and speed in which your brain is able to process information. With that being said, Alpha Brain also contains unnecessary ingredients that do not give the user any cognitive benefits.

What is Alpha Brain Instant?

Alpha Brain Instant contains the exact same ingredients as the original Alpha Brain. The only difference between these two products is the delivery system. While the original Alpha Brain comes in the form of a capsule, which takes a few minutes for your body to digest, Instant comes in a fine powder that is mixed in to water or beverage and can be digested immediately. This will allow Alpha Brain to start providing its nootropic effects more quickly.

What Are Some Alpha Brain Alternatives?

There are tons of Alpha Brain nootropic alternatives out there to choose from but based on our research we recommend Mind Lab Pro or Performance Lab Mind. Both of these nootropic supplements do NOT have proprietary blends so you know exactly what you are putting in to your body.

In addition, we have found that both of these supplements are more effective than Onnit Alpha Brain.

Mind Lab Pro vs Alpha Brain

Mind Lab Pro is the superior nootropic to Alpha Brain. Instead of containing proprietary blends like Alpha Brain, Mind Lab Pro is completely transparent about what ingredients and what quantities are in their supplement. Mind Lab Pro contains 11 all natural ingredients, each serving a specific purpose for improving cognitive performance.

Unfortunately, while Alpha Brain does have some good ingredients such as Bacopa Monnieri, not all ingredients in the supplement benefit the brain and their proprietary blend masks the quantities of the ingredients that are key to a good nootropic, so its impossible to know what you are really getting.

After researching lots of different nootropics, we have found Mind Lab Pro to be the #1 nootropic supplement out there hands down.
